FRANCES AND MARYBETH

BY NEALE KIMMEL

March 8 – 18, 2012
Studio Theatre

Two sisters. Three men. Fourteen litres of milk.
One ultimate date night.

A modern dilemma. A classic comedy of errors.

(bracket) Theatre proudly presents the world premiere of Frances and Marybeth, a new comedy by emerging Toronto-born playwright Neale Kimmel.

Frances has just had a life moment. What's a life moment? She's not entirely sure, but she's now determined to get herself off the couch, forget about her cheating ex-fiance, and throw the ultimate date night. And, she's dragging her younger sister Marybeth, an artist who sells her “Paint by Numbers” on Craigslist, along for the ride. With the handsome Spanish man Frances picks up at the grocery store, and Marybeth's Craigslist boyfriend due to arrive any minute, an unexpected party crasher makes the evening a little more colourful than expected.

An outrageous comedy about love, moustaches and picking up the pieces, Frances and Marybeth are two sisters learning that sometimes to get it right, you have to paint outside the lines.

Frances and Marybeth (Act 1) was originally workshopped and produced at Alumnae Theatre's New Ideas Festival in March, 2011. After quickly becoming an audience favourite, it has been developed into it's full length glory and is ready to make the leap from Festival darling to Studio Stage gem.

“Witty, smart, spontaneous. An unexpectedly delicious play.”

“Neale Kimmel's Frances and Marybeth is a very entertaining play. The well-structured script moves along at a good pace, with quirky dialogue and great physicality.  I really wanted to find out what happens in Act II. Let’s hope Kimmel’s work develops into a full-length show!”
