About the Playwright

Anita Majumdar

An award-winning actress, playwright and choreographer, Anita is also a graduate of the prestigious National Theatre School of Canada, holds a degree in English, Theatre and South Asian Languages from the University of British Columbia. Dancing for the last twenty years, Anita's training originates in kathak, but she has also studied bharatnatyam and odissi. She is also currently working on a new development piece with Nightswimming, a company here in Toronto dedicated to serving new play development and their creators. Amongst her acting credits are globally celebrated performances in Deepa Mehta's adaptation of the Salman Rushdie novel Midnight's Children and CBC film Murder Unveiled to name a few. As a playwright, her self-written Bollywood musical on the issue of shadism, Same Same But Different premiered at Theatre Passe Muraille and Alberta Theatre Projects and was nominated for two Betty Mitchell Awards including a nomination for Outstanding New Play. Anita is the 2013 recipient of the Governor General Protege Prize in Playwriting under the mentorship of John Murrell and this past season, Anita was awarded two Dora Mavor Moore awards for Outstanding Performance and Outstanding New Play for her work on Boys With Cars.

About the Director

Brian Quirt

Brian is the Artistic Director of Nightswimming, and Director of the Banff Centre Playwrights Lab. As a director, his credits include premieres of these Nightswimming commissions: Anita Majumdar’s The Fish Eyes Trilogy (2014/15/17 national tour) and Same Same But Different (Theatre Passe Muraille/Alberta Theatre Projects), Carmen Aguirre’s Broken Tailbone (US premiere in October 2017) and Blue Box (2012-2014 national tour), Anosh Irani’s Bombay Black (Cahoots Theatre and tour), Judith Thompson’s Such Creatures (Theatre Passe Muraille), Andy Massingham’s Rough House (national tour) and Richard Sanger’s Whispering Pines (GCTC). He has created eight of his own plays, most recently Why We Are Here! (with Martin Julien) which ran at the 2017 High Performance Rodeo in Calgary, and These Are The Songs That I Sing When I'm Sad (with Jane Miller) which recently premiered at Vancouver's Boca del Lupo. He is the current Board Chair and a past-President of the Literary Managers & Dramaturgs of the Americas, and two-time recipient of LMDA’s Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy. He has been nominated for four Dora Mavor Moore Awards; one for his adaptation (with Soheil Parsa) of Aurash, and three for directing, including Anita's Boys With Cars at Young People's Theatre.
