Bio

Makram Ayache is a playwright, director, performer, and educator based in Toronto. His work moves between the intimate and the epic, exploring queerness, Arab identity, cultural memory, and resistance. He creates plays that grapple with love, legacy, and survival—often blending personal history with political urgency, and truth with imagination. His work includes original writing and adaptations with a deep commitment to complexity and transformation. His play “The Green Line” was named a Governor General literary award finalist in 2025. His play “The Hooves Belonged to the Deer” was named one of ten best productions (Tarragon Theatre in association with Buddies Theatre) in Ontario and won “Outstanding Independent Production” (In Arms Theatre) at the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards. He has worked with Shakespeare in the Ruff, Tarragon Theatre, the Citadel Theatre, Crows Theatre, and more across Canada. He is the founder and artistic director of In Arms Theatre.
