Paul Smith

Bio

Paul Smith (he/they) is a Thursday-born performer, writer, and director from Stittsville, ON., based in Toronto, ON. Driven by their impulse to stir what has come before to make way for what comes next, Paul explores how narratives that center marginalized bodies can be adapted into stories of reclamation, innovation, and protest. Recent projects of theirs include Bush of Ghosts (Blue Bird Theatre Collective), The First Stone (New Harlem Productions, Great Canadian Theatre Company, Buddies in Bad Times), Anansi v. God(s) (TACTICS), BLACKPenTHER (Cahoots Theatre), and the Artist Mentorship Program (Black Theatre Workshop & the National Arts Centre). When not thinking about the symbiotic relationship between theatre and film, or moderating a talkback, Paul is Assistant Directing ARC Stage’s Rockabye, writing his new work The Gathering, and listening to Frank Ocean (on repeat).
